With any luck, you’ll never need to have your vehicle’s windshield repaired. If you’re one of the lucky ones you’ll drive through life with nice, shiny, non-cracked windows. The odds are, however, that you’re going to need to have your windshield, back window, or side windows repaired sooner or later.
It’s not all doom and gloom, though. There are a lot of myths about automotive glass repair, and we’re here to shine a little light on the process so you can have peace of mind if you ever get a crack in your windshield.
Whether you have a small chip or a huge crack in your windshield, you should always take them seriously. While you may think the small crack that doesn’t obstruct your field of view isn’t a big deal, it certainly can be. Any crack or blemish can weaken your windshield, so if you’re ever in an accident, your windshield is less likely to withstand the force of the accident and potentially shatter on you and your passengers.
If you bring your vehicle in to be assessed as soon as you notice a chip or crack, there’s a good chance they can be repaired to the point your windshield looks as good as new. On the other hand, if you let a crack spread over time, there’s a higher likelihood it will need to be replaced completely.
While we can’t give away all our professional secrets, for relatively small chips and cracks, a glass resin is used. The resin is injected into the crack or chip and gradually dries and hardens. Done properly, your windshield will look like new and be just as strong as when it was first installed on your car. There are do-it-yourself kits available, but we suggest you leave glass repairs to the experts.
We hope we took a bit of the mystery out of automotive glass repair. We alos hope you’re never in a situation where you need to have your windshield repaired or replaced, but if you ever need a hand, feel free to contact us anytime.
